Welcome to April!

Can you believe we're already in the second quarter of 2008??? I can't!!! April is looking like a lovely month. Two baby showers, one church luncheon, one orchard dinner and I'm NOT planning to entertain!! Woo-hoo!! I AM, however, planning on some spring cleaning and purging and getting some organizational projects done.
What are YOUR plans??

A blustery day

Yes, we had just enough time between church and more church on Sunday to use the kite my father-in-law got for us. It's so cool!!! Andrew kept saying, "Mommy, look at that!" He and Drew fun with it.

Andrew looooved holding the reel for the string.

He really thought he was flying it!

Then he was VERY unhappy when we had to go home. He kept saying, "More dragon, Mommy!" It was a hit. With as windy as it's been lately, we'll be back out there soon.

Saturday

I could count on one finger the times I've had the house to myself since Andrew was born. YES, I go places without him and YES, Drew'll let me have some time to myself while he keeps him corralled somewhere in the house, or even takes him to the park...but for me to have an entire morning BY MYSELF, AT HOME is unprecedented. Two cups of coffee, two magazines, a little e-mail, some Internet research...a very nice morning, indeed.
Andrew didn't even see me yet today--so I snuck this picture of them, waiting for their ride to arrive to go to a "Dads and Toddlers" event at a local church. Although I'd laid the outfit out and fixed his cup last night, Drew dressed him and evidently styled his hair. Cute!!

Here's what awaited me: granola cereal with banana, my coffee and a pile of unread magazines.

Thank you, husband--it was much-needed and very appreciated!!

Stay tuned for big changes

Hi, all!! Did you notice the new name??? "THIS DAY" based on a Goethe quote from the cover of my favorite Mary E. journal that I use as my gratitude journal.
Why the new name, you ask?? WELL! This blog is going to remain at this address, will remain private and will remain our primary FAMILY blog. I'll keep using our real names, post lots of pictures, etc.
BUT...I want...nay, NEED...a public blog. I meet SO many wonderful ladies out in blog land, especially through Etsy, and most of whom are either #1, raising young children #2, VERY crafty and willing to share their best tips, tricks and projects--or BOTH! And it's just too fun to get to know each other and inspire each other. They participate in craft swaps, giveaways, recipe/pattern exchanges and all sorts of fun things...and I feel like a goober, telling them they have to give me their e-mail so they can view my private blog!! Plus, I doubt they care about all my private-type stuff, anyway.
"Roots & Wings" (which is definitely more "me" than the "us" this blog has become) will MOVE--and get a brand new banner and template!! I've gotten in touch with a freelance graphic designer I found on Etsy and she's going to design it for me. And it's going to be my PUBLIC blog. I'm so excited!! You can see her Etsy site here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5027300 to see her work.
I want the new, public blog to be more about my attempts at home organization...a healthier lifestyle...crafting...shopping...and LESS about my private life and family.
So stay tuned and, naturally, you'll be invited to view the new one!!
I hope "This Day" is wonderful for you, too!

The AFTER: Bathroom re-do

I love finishing projects!! Here's my latest.
When Drew and I were engaged back in 2005, the palm tree motif was at its height so I registered for palm tree-themed bathroom decor. Palm tree shower curtain, matching towels and red "sultan" bath rugs to match. We accessorized with palm trees as well and even had a camel. This is the only picture I could find of the old room, but you get the idea.

About the first of this year, I got the itch to change the bathroom and lemme tell ya--it wasn't hard to let go of it all. Actually, we kept the camel. He's a part of the family now. But I changed the rest.
My inspiration was the "blue temple garland" Amy Butler fabric I fell in love with.

I found a gal on Etsy to make me hand towels and a tissue box cover, then I had to search high and low to match the aqua-esque blue colors. I finally found a decent match and I do love the bright shade of blue. Yes, I'm getting another bath towel. So, without doing any major projects, I kept the khaki walls got a new white waffle-weave shower curtain for a spa feel (thanks, boss, for the gift card!!), then accessorized with more blue and green. My friend, who is my best Southern Living At HOME customer, described it as "Very Southern Living." I'll take that as a compliment. A lot of it IS SLAH, actually--the "Acanthus Votive Centerpiece" basket, the green and blue vase/tooth brush holder and the green glass candle holders. I love my SLAH business!!

I love the flowers on the ledge over the tub and the way the white lightens up the room.

I swear, the whole house seems lighter. I get that "aaaaah" feeling when I go in there. Nice.

Signs of Spring

Here's how I know it's Spring:
1. Blooms, blooms everywhere. Even these weeds in the back yard look pretty!!

Our formerly dead bushes are coming back to life!
New life, everywhere you look. I got the idea to put some flowers into teacups--lovely!! I spruced up the back patio a little today. Makes me want to fire up the grill and have a big, juicy steak and a nice, fresh salad--al fresco, of course!

2. Fresh sand in the ol' sandbox. This sand is very beachy. So nice, in fact, that Andrew actually laid in it!!

I thought these colorful toys--just the way he left them--was quite artistic.
3. Three hours outside this morning, blowing bubbles, painting (thanks, Brandie, for the idea--DUH!) and drawing with sidewalk chalk. Blue skies, a breeze and the perfect temperature. An Arizona spring day at its best!

New 'do

God bless Judi, my hair dresser in Chandler, who accomodates me only coming in every five months or so and expecting her to perform a miracle!! And God bless my mom, who watches Andrew while I get my hour-long hair cut!!
Yes, my last cut was in October!! It got loooong in the meantime, and so heavy. She re-cut the whole thing, stacked the back and razored off a bunch, too--it feels so light now!! I love it!
Her nail tech had a few jewelry orders for me, too, so technically, that paid for my haircut--and then some! I love my Cookie Lee business!!
I now have an appointment in eight weeks--much more reasonable. I'll be right after my mom again so she can take Andrew. What a nice arrangment!!
She sold me a HUGE set of shampoo and conditioner because I told her that the stuff I have never leaves my hair feeling as clean as I'd like. So for $42, I got a really snazzy haircut and probably a three-month supply of shampoo and conditioner. If I can save up in the meantime, I'll get some fun highlights done in 8 weeks. Assuming I'm not pregnant, of course.
At any rate, I'm all set for Spring now!! And the shorter 'do shows off my jewelry! :)
Here's the before and after:

We're ready...

...to start trying for baby #2! We're insured...I've been taking prenatal vitamins...life is running fairly smoothly...and, well, we're just...READY! Andrew will be well over three years old and I'd be due in early 2009 (depending on how long it takes, of course). We don't know if God's plan will align with ours but with Andrew, we felt good about it--and we're feeling that way again. It just seems to be time.
We really wanted to avoid an end-of-the-year baby so now that we're almost out of March, we breathed a collective sigh of relief. I think our entire family did! Nov./Dec. is a little hectic for us!!
So now we're just going to be open to the possibility and see what happens. Since I'm a big Ferility Awareness fan, I get a little obsessive about it--so forgive me if I'm a little more distracted and high-strung than normal. You never know how long it will take so until it does "take," I'm going to be keeping the stress levels low and trying to be as healthy as possible.
Pray for us...and stay tuned!

Happy Easter!!

First of all, you know I love comparison pictures--so here's Andrew his first Easter, last year and this year. Can you imagine what he'll look like NEXT year??

Oh, how I love Easter!! Eggs, pastel colors, spring breezes, bunnies and chicks... I love it all!! I love the songs of victory sung at church on Easter Sunday, I love Easter egg hunts, I love breaking out the white and pastel-colored clothes, I love all the flowers in bloom and the blue skies...oh, how I love Easter!
So this morning started with Andrew going through his Easter basket. Lots of fun goodies! He loves these mini M&Ms and I know he'll enjoy the bubbles and chalk, too.

He also got a new addition to his train from the Phoenix Zoo, which he thought went well on TOP of the M&Ms. Interesting.

I went ahead to church then Drew and Andrew met me there for the Easter egg hunt between services, in the grass in front of church.
Andrew did much better with actually gathering eggs, rather than stopping with one to sit and see what's inside. He filled his entire basket!!
Drew asked, "What're we gonna do with all these jelly beans??" Good question. Andrew sucks the sugar off then spits out the gummy inside. Lovely.

Here's us together. It was windy!! Andrew isn't so good at smiling for the camera these days.

And our family. Yep, that's the best we could do. Andrew was eating jelly beans, of course. Nice face, huh?

Compare that to last year--Andrew is bigger and Drew is smaller! :)

I think this is just sweet of us--I love being a family!!

My friend was there with her two precious daughters--one is three and the other a newborn--and I thought about how nice it would be for us to have a new baby next Easter. There's no telling how we'll look next year!!
This one is just handsome of my hubby--I had to share!!

ANYway, my parents came to the second service while I taught the two-year-olds (they were a riot), then we all headed back to our house and met up with Brandon, Julie and Logan for Easter dinner. Ham, corn, potatoes, biscuits, deviled eggs and lemonade--all delicious. Then we went to the park to take pictures (they're on my Dad's camera so I'll probably never see any prints) and let the boys play. When we got too warm, we came back home, had dessert and played some more! We were also celebrating Drew and Brandon's new jobs, which feels pretty good. There is much to be thankful for, but especially for Jesus--"He is risen!!"

Moms' Group Easter Egg Hunt

Today was our church's moms' group's annual Easter Egg Hunt at a member's home near the church. The weather was gorgeous and the kids had so much fun. It tired Andrew out--he took a three-hour nap afterward (and I did, too!).
This is my favorite picture from the day--see the jelly beans flying?? He thought it was hilarious.

Here's us after the hunt.

Besides all the fun with eggs, Andrew "did it all," as my mom pointed out. He played with the animals, rode a bike, swung, played in the sandbox, kicked a ball...you name it, he did it. They don't call him BUSY for nothing!!
Here he is with Nana, looking at their pony. He loved climbing all over this fence. This is his Old Navy outfit--I just love it! So handsome. He and Nana match in their yellow.

And here's one of him gathering eggs. His only problem is he wants to open each one as he picks it up. Once he found one with pretzels inside, he'd have quit looking if we hadn't encouraged him. Heehee. He did have fun, though. It was a great event. More egg hunting tomorrow and Sunday!! Phew!!

What I wouldn't give...

...to get this kind of sleep again. Phew.
He started out all balled up then stretched out. Isn't he huge???

Did you notice the marker on the belly, hand and leg?? Heehee. They're the new "Crayola Window Markers" that draw on glass and wipe off--very cool. He loved drawing all over the sliding glass doors with them--it was like a gigantic piece of see-through paper--and they do wash off easily. It's my new favorite thing.

Then I threw this one in, just cuz I love him so much. I call it "smug jelly face."

St. Patrick's Day...and beyond!!

Did you know I have Irish roots?? I believe it was my great-great-great-grandparents who came to America from Ireland. My grandparents' last name is Ryan and we've talked about naming a future daughter Ryan. It's a great name! So I loooove St. Patrick's Day!
Here's Andrew in 2006 at almost four months old...

in 2007 at almost 16 months old...

and in 2008 at two-and-a-quarter.

And here he was this year, goofing off with Nana. He though the headbands were a riot.

Yep, another whirlwind weekend. I'm worn out. Phew! We'll start with...
Thursday: My father-in-law came into town so he hung out here and enjoyed watching Andrew with this goofy toy of a plastic ball with some sort of weasel attached. It runs on batteries so it spins and moves. I call it "Toddler Torture." Andrew wanted the ball--withOUT the rat attached!! He started calling it "Doggy Ball." and would chase it around and WANTED it to be turned on--but ran away from it and wanted us to to turn it off. Mommy torture, too. He took a nice nap, though, then we all went out to dinner--quite a treat!! Then I had a Women's Leadership Meeting for church afterward and didn't get home until 10:00.
Friday: Ok, I don't remember anything that eventful about Friday and, in fact, I think we ended up having a quiet evening at home. NICE!
Saturday: I had a networking meeting and, thankfully, it was at a coffee shop with a kids' area and Andrew played happily for two hours while I talked to some fellow home-based businesswomen. After that, it was off to my boss's house for an Easter egg hunt and lunch. Andrew played and played and I got to visit with the ladies, eat a nice meal and hang out. Andrew went home exhausted and took another good nap. That night, we ended up staying in as well.
Sunday: Oy vay, seriously. Church, church and more church. We ALL went to first service, then Drew served in the twos class WITH me second service. It was --chaotic, as usual. Twos are a hard little group but I love 'em!! Drew made lunch while I put Andrew down for a nap and we had just enough time to do our detailed budget after church before leaving again for Financial Peace U, followed immediately by our home group meeting. We got home at about 8:00--spent. Sundays are looooong, especially for Andrew. He does well, all things considered.
Monday: St. Patrick's Day! I "worked," then Mom came over to help me prepare for hosting Bunco. Andrew finally napped, allowing me to go to the store withOUT him and buy all the food. Thanks, Boss, for the gift cards!! Then I cooked and cleaned until all the ladies came--all 14 of them. It was a blast--but I'm glad we're not hosting again until September!! We served tons of green food (pesto pasta, salad, bread, spinach dip and crackers) then green punch and mint/chocolate ice cream sandwiches for dessert. Yum, yum, YUM!
Tuesday: Mom stayed over last night since Bunco goes so late, then we spent a leisurely morning together and headed for the Phoenix Zoo. Andrew only lasts about two hours each time we go but we saw a totally different part of the zoo this time so it was really fun. He always pets the goats, though!! Here's us at Griffin's Barn, built in memory of the son of a friend of ours from our Hallmark days. We always go to the barn when we visit the zoo.

Here's the three things he enjoyed most at the zoo:
1. The donkey. It put on a little show for him, digging in the dirt and doing a little dance--it was a hoot!

2. Pushing the button to get the info. on the zebras. This kept him occupied for a full ten minutes. When other kids tried to push it--or even just listen to it--he'd say "Bye-bye" and try to shoo them away.

3. Trying on my sunglasses.

And I actually got stung by a crazy bee--that hasn't happened to me in probably twenty years. Better me than Andrew, though. At least I'm not allergic.
ANYway, yes. Big week. Here's some highlights:
1. I'm wearing contacts now!! I LOVE them!! So much better than glasses.
2. Mom bought a wagon for Andrew and Logan and it worked out really well at the zoo. It'll come in handy a lot. I can't wait for this time next year when both boys will be more apt to enjoy the zoo together.

3. Andrew as decided to potty train himself since I'm not so gung-ho. We heard him in the bathroom so I darted in there. He had taken his diaper off and was quickly climbing up on the potty. He positioned himself and pushed his little winky down and I said, "Are you going pee-pee on the potty?" and sure enough--he tinkled in the potty!! And wiped, flushed and washed his hands!! So I cheered and we told Aunty Sarah and Daddy and he got a jelly bean! :) I suppose I ought to start potty training him. Ugh. He seems ready, it's just that I'M not!! We'll take it slow.
4. I'm not pregnant so we have officially avoided a 2008 baby!! Yes, that's exciting!! Our November/December is jam-packed with birthdays and I was resolved NOT to have another baby at the end of the year--and we avoided the window of opportunity so now we're posed for a baby--God willing--SOME time in 2009. Woo-hoo!! I'd love a Spring baby next year--how fun!
5. St. Patrick's Day marks the ten-year anniversary of my prickly pear cactus tattoo and the day before we left Florida to move to Arizona. I'll write more about that on the anniversary of the day we arrived here. But, man, ten years flies by. And my tattoo looks as good as ever--even after being a week past my due-date with an eight-pound baby!
So there ya have it--you're all caught up!!
